We’ve been following the Indian’s women’s national boxing team since October 2006, when we packed our bags and set off for the 4th World Women’s Boxing Competition in New Delhi.
Ameesha spotted photos of some Indian women boxers at the World Press Photo exhibit and couldn’t believe that they were able to overcome social pressures in order to fight. (See the photos that started it all.) With her Indian heritage, she could understand what these women were up against. Then, she did some research and discovered that they were among the best in the world.
At the competition in 2006, the team beat out all odds and won medals in 8 categories out of 13, granting them the championship team title. Since then, we’ve been shuttling back and forth between Canada and India with our camera to capture their stories.
